The VA Buzz

Imposter Syndrome is that terrible little voice in your head telling you t=
hat you=E2=80=99re not good enough=2C you don=E2=80=99t have what it takes=
=2C and you=E2=80=99ll never amount to anything. It can come out of the bl=
ue when we least expect it =E2=80=93 and it=E2=80=99s never pleasant.

The first thing I want you to know is that it=E2=80=99s normal. Everyone h=
as it =E2=80=93 period. So=2C if you=E2=80=99re someone who thinks you=E2=
=80=99re the only one (like I did)=2C you=E2=80=99re not.

Sometimes=2C the voice will be your own. Often=2C it will be the voice of=
 someone else who we believe is judging us or has openly judged us in the=
 past=E2=80=A6 a teacher=2C parent=2C friend=2C or spouse are likely candi=
dates.

The voice is creative=2C thoughtful=2C and leaves no stone unturned when i=
t comes to telling us what it=E2=80=99s thinking. And it has no timeline=
=2C so something that happened days=2C weeks=2C or years ago is fair game.

Imposter Syndrome usually shows up when we want to expand ourselves - when=
 we want to start something new or try something different. When you=E2=80=
=99re in those circumstances=2C naturally=2C you get scared; the voice see=
s a chink in your armor=2C and it slides through and into your brain.

But at that moment=2C you=E2=80=99ve got a choice. Listen to it or do some=
thing different to change the message.

Here=E2=80=99s the conversation that I have with my Imposter Syndrome when=
 it kicks in:

First=2C I notice the negativity and indulge (I=E2=80=99m human).

Then=2C realizing what=E2=80=99s happening=2C I look objectively at what t=
he voices are telling me. I separate myself from the emotions the voice is=
 trying to invoke and look at the message itself.

I think =E2=80=93 oh wow =E2=80=93 listen to that craziness in my head=E2=
=80=A6 is that true? And I=E2=80=99ve noticed that about 100% of the time=
=2C it=E2=80=99s not.

So=2C I replaced the voice =E2=80=93 one thought at a time=2C with a more=
 useful message. Here=E2=80=99s how that might sound:

I=E2=80=99m just scared. I=E2=80=99ve been scared before. It=E2=80=99s not=
 a big deal. I can do new things. I can do hard things. I have what it tak=
es. What=E2=80=99s a step that I can take right now?

And by taking action=2C the voice will quiet down=2C and you can get back=
 to that big change in your life.

ng>Imposter Syndrome is that terrible little voice in your head</strong>&n=
bsp;telling you that you=E2=80=99re not good enough=2C you don=E2=80=99t h=
ave what it takes=2C and you=E2=80=99ll never amount to anything. It can c=
ome out of the blue when we least expect it =E2=80=93 and it=E2=80=99s nev=
er pleasant.<br>
<br>
<strong>The first thing I want you to know is that it=E2=80=99s normal.&nb=
sp;</strong>Everyone has it =E2=80=93 period. So=2C if you=E2=80=99re some=
one who thinks you=E2=80=99re the only one (like I did)=2C you=E2=80=99re=
 not.<br>
<br>
<strong>Sometimes=2C the voice will be your own.&nbsp;</strong>Often=2C it=
 will be the voice of someone else who we believe is judging us or has ope=
nly judged us in the past=E2=80=A6 a teacher=2C parent=2C friend=2C or spo=
use are likely candidates. &nbsp;<br>
<br>
The voice is creative=2C&nbsp;thoughtful=2C and leaves no stone unturned w=
hen it comes to telling us what it=E2=80=99s thinking. And it has no timel=
ine=2C so something that happened days=2C weeks=2C or years ago is fair ga=
me.<br>
<br>
<strong>Imposter Syndrome usually shows up when we want to expand ourselve=
s&nbsp;</strong>- when we want to start something new or try something dif=
ferent. When you=E2=80=99re in those circumstances=2C naturally=2C you get=
 scared; the voice sees a chink in your armor=2C and it slides through and=
 into your brain.<br>
<br>
But at that moment=2C you=E2=80=99ve got a choice. Listen to it or do some=
thing different to change the message.<br>
<br>
<strong>Here=E2=80=99s the conversation that I have with my Imposter Syndr=
ome when it kicks in:</strong><br>
<br>
First=2C I notice the negativity and indulge (I=E2=80=99m human).<br>
<br>
Then=2C realizing what=E2=80=99s happening=2C I look objectively at what t=
he voices are telling me. I separate myself from the emotions the voice is=
 trying to invoke and look at the message itself.<br>
<br>
I think =E2=80=93 oh wow =E2=80=93 listen to that craziness in my head=E2=
=80=A6 is that true? And I=E2=80=99ve noticed that about 100% of the time=
=2C it=E2=80=99s not.<br>
<br>
So=2C I replaced the voice =E2=80=93 one thought at a time=2C with a more=
 useful message.&nbsp;<strong>Here=E2=80=99s how that might sound:</strong=
><br>
<br>
I=E2=80=99m just scared. I=E2=80=99ve been scared before. It=E2=80=99s not=
 a big deal. I can do new things. I can do hard things. I have what it tak=
es. What=E2=80=99s a step that I can take right now?<br>
<br>
<strong>And by taking action=2C the voice will quiet down=2C and you can g=
et back to that big change in your life.</strong></p>
