The number one thing I=E2=80=99ve learned in the 13 years I=E2=80=99ve bee=
n a Virtual Assistant is that clients aren=E2=80=99t reliable. One hundred=
 percent not reliable.

But that=E2=80=99s only a problem if you don=E2=80=99t understand how the=
 business of being a Virtual Assistant works. When we break it down=2C it=
 goes like this: clients need help=2C they hire a Virtual Assistant=2C the=
 VA assists the client=2C and gets paid based on their hourly rate. Pretty=
 simple.

But there=E2=80=99s some confusion in how this plays out that causes disap=
pointment and frustration for the Virtual Assistant. I discovered this con=
fusion when a VA asked me how to convince clients to give them more work.

That question stopped me in my tracks because when I heard it=2C I realize=
d that this VA (and I=E2=80=99ve discovered many other Virtual Assistants)=
 is missing the point.

When a client hires you=2C they might say they=E2=80=99ll need you five ho=
urs a week. You=E2=80=99re thrilled to have regular hours you can count on=
=2E But here=E2=80=99s the truth. Depending on those hours is a mistake and=
 rarely works out as expected.

When working with a client=2C you are in service to their needs (note: I s=
aid service=2C not a servant; there=E2=80=99s a difference). You=E2=80=99r=
e there to support them and what=E2=80=99s good for their businesses=2C no=
 matter how it affects the number of hours they provide you. One month mig=
ht mean 10 hours=2C the next three might mean zero.

It=E2=80=99s a client=E2=80=99s prerogative to unpredictably change the am=
ount of time they need or to stop a project in a heartbeat without giving=
 it a second thought. Not because they=E2=80=99re not wonderful and friend=
ly people=2C but because worrying about you is not their responsibility.

While this might sound terrible=2C it=E2=80=99s not. What=E2=80=99s terrib=
le is assuming your clients are responsible for your success as a business=
 owner. Please don=E2=80=99t put yourself in the position of having a busi=
ness that=E2=80=99s limping along and then blame your clients because they=
=E2=80=99re not giving you enough to do.

When you make the important mindset shift that you=E2=80=99re responsible=
 for having enough hours by consistently bringing in new clients=2C you=E2=
=80=99ll be focused on what matters to achieve your goals. Don=E2=80=99t m=
ake the mistake of focusing on the number of clients. That=E2=80=99s not a=
 measure of success -  how many hours you=E2=80=99re billing is. (More her=

Approach every new client as a potential long-term relationship=2C but don=

 needs and priorities. To be successful=2C you=E2=80=99ll need to embrace=
 the in-the-moment nature of Virtual Assistance and roll with the flow.

umber one thing I=E2=80=99ve learned in the 13 years I=E2=80=99ve been a V=
irtual Assistant is that <strong>clients aren=E2=80=99t reliable.</strong>=
 One hundred percent not reliable.<br>
<br>
But that=E2=80=99s only a problem if you don=E2=80=99t understand how the=
 <strong><em>business</em> </strong>of being a Virtual Assistant works. Wh=
en we break it down=2C it goes like this: clients need help=2C they hire a=
 Virtual Assistant=2C the VA assists the client=2C and gets paid based on=
 their hourly rate. Pretty simple.<br>
<br>
But there=E2=80=99s some confusion in how this plays out that <strong>caus=
es disappointment and frustration for the Virtual Assistant.</strong> I di=
scovered this confusion when a VA asked me how to convince clients to give=
 them more work.<br>
<br>
That question stopped me in my tracks because when I heard it=2C I realize=
d that this VA (and I=E2=80=99ve discovered many other Virtual Assistants)=
 is missing the point.<br>
<br>
When a client hires you=2C they might say they=E2=80=99ll need you five ho=
urs a week. You=E2=80=99re thrilled to have regular hours you can count on=
=2E But here=E2=80=99s the truth.<strong> Depending on those hours is a mist=
ake and rarely works out as expected.</strong><br>
<br>
When working with a client=2C you are in service to their needs (note: I s=
aid <em>service</em>=2C not a <em>servant; </em>there=E2=80=99s a differen=
ce). <em>You=E2=80=99re</em> there to support <em>them</em> and what=E2=80=
=99s good for their businesses=2C no matter how it affects the number of h=
ours they provide you. <strong>One month might mean 10 hours=2C the next t=
hree might mean zero.</strong><br>
<br>
It=E2=80=99s a client=E2=80=99s prerogative to unpredictably change the am=
ount of time they need or to stop a project in a heartbeat without giving=
 it a second thought. <strong>Not because they=E2=80=99re not wonderful an=
d friendly people=2C but because worrying about you is not their responsib=
ility.</strong><br>
<br>
While this might sound terrible=2C it=E2=80=99s not. What=E2=80=99s terrib=
le is assuming your clients are responsible for your success as a business=
 owner. <strong>Please don=E2=80=99t put yourself in the position of havin=
g a business that=E2=80=99s limping along</strong> and then blame your cli=
ents because they=E2=80=99re not giving you enough to do.<br>
<br>
When you make the important mindset shift that you=E2=80=99re responsible=
 for having enough hours by consistently bringing in new clients=2C you=E2=
=80=99ll be focused on what matters to achieve your goals. <strong>Don=E2=
=80=99t make the mistake of focusing on the <em>number</em> of clients. </=
strong>That=E2=80=99s not a measure of success - &nbsp;how many hours you=
=E2=80=99re billing is. (More&nbsp;<a href=3D"https://thevaconnection.us12=

Approach every new client as a potential long-term relationship=2C but don=
=E2=80=99t depend on it. That way=2C you=E2=80=99ll always be on the looko=
ut for new opportunities and won=E2=80=99t be surprised by shifting client=
 needs and priorities. <strong>To be successful=2C you=E2=80=99ll need to=
 embrace the in-the-moment nature of Virtual Assistance and roll with the=
 flow. &nbsp;</strong><br>
