Hey There!

2023 was a tough year for designers, right? Maybe one of the
toughest in a long time.

If that wasn't your experience you can disregard this email and
instead reply to tell me how you did it because I don't have a
clue =F0=9F=A4=A6=F0=9F=8F=BC=E2=80=8D=E2=99=82=EF=B8=8F

But, if you're like me and a lot of other designers I know:

* Sales were down
* Leads were thin
* Things plain sucked

From 2020 to 2022 it seemed like businesses couldn't get enough
of what web and brand designers were putting out there. But all
of a sudden things slowed down.

Big time.

Hear me out, this is not an email with any kind of predictions
for how 2024 is going to look. Honestly, I have no clue. It could
be better. It could be worse. It could be more of the same.

Whatever it turns out to be, there is one thing that I have seen
separate businesses that make it through years like 2023 and
businesses that don't:

They've made the DOING the DESTINATION.

What do I mean by that?

No one is promised good outcomes from the efforts they make in
their business.

BUT, something you will always have access to is THE WORK itself.

There's an ancient proverb that says:

"You have the right to work, but for the work's sake only. You
have no right to the fruits of work. Desire for the fruits of
work must never be your motive in working."
So rather than pinning all of your hopes on the rewards of your
effort, learn to love the doing.

* Learn to love designing.
* Learn to love the client calls.
* Learn to love the revision process.
* Learn to love tinkering with workflows.
* Learn to love building a new brand out of nothing.
* Learn to love having to pivot when things don't go the way you
planned them to.

When you make the DOING the DESTINATION there is literally
nothing that can hold you down.

Gary Vee was once asked if he would ever delegate some or all of
the work he does. His response: "Absolutely not. (

His point is that he loves the process that leads to the outcomes
more than he loves the outcomes.

Hear me: I'm not saying you have to completely ignore the
outcomes. That would be a bad move.

You kind of have to keep an eye on the fruits of the work to
validate if whether or not what you're doing is actually any
good. AND (let's be real) kids gotta eat.

BUT, that can't be the only measurement that you use to judge
success. AND, that certainly won't be what sustains you through
years like 2023.

buying a marker to create art or eat for that day because he
didn't make enough money to do both. Now his work sells for
thousands of dollars.

He said, "It was 10 to 20 more years of tiny little
things...constantly trying until finally I began to make a living
as an artist."

I don't know where you're at in the journey. You might be on the
brink of burnout because nothing seems to be working the way that
you hoped it would.

But here's my encouragement to you: keep going. Remind yourself
why you love doing what you do. Don't let the outcomes be THE
sign of success or failure.

Sometimes success simply looks like trying again.
