Hey!

As you're finalizing your New Year's resolutions, may I offer one
that you might not have considered?

* Waste a decent amount of time this year =F0=9F=98=B1

I've been obsessed with mastering the time that I have in my day
for as long as I can remember.

In high school, I would time block my week. This was well before
time-blocking was even a thing =F0=9F=98=82 I've read pretty much every
time-management/productivity book you can think of.

And, it's this time of year, when people start to ramp up
conversations about goals for the next year that I cringe a
little bit, because, despite my best efforts at mastering my
efficiency and becoming a productivity superstar year in and year
out, I constantly find myself failing at it:

=F0=9F=9B=91 time

This leaves me wondering if most of the popular conversations
around this subject have completely overlooked one pivotal piece
of information:

We're just human. We have limitations. We don't work like
machines.

And, we actually lose a little bit of ourselves when we try to
eke out as much productivity as we possibly can.

I read a book a while back called "Range." (

) With so many folks obsessing over niching down and focusing on
one discipline, "Range" talks about how, while it may take
longer, it's essential to have a variety of interests and how
focusing on multiple disciplines can make you much better at what
you do.

One guy the book talks about is Oliver Smithies. (

) Smithies was a Nobel Prize-winning geneticist.

Fun fact, Smithies got into genetics when he was taking a
sabbatical from his normal job as a molecular biologist =F0=9F=98=82

Smithies had a normal practice of reserving an entire day to work
on something that interested him that was not directly connected
to his 9 - 5 job.

It was from "wasting his time" that Smithies made some of his
most surprising and well-known discoveries.

HOW? Because, when you give yourself permission to "waste some
time" you actually become more productive.

This is exactly why Google allows their employees to spend 20% of
their work week on projects not related to their jobs. It's not
out of the goodness of their hearts! They want their employees to
be more productive.

Creativity is a really inefficient process. You make progress.
You get stuck. You backtrack a little bit. You get discouraged.
Then you make a little more progress.

You will never increase your creative output by trying to bend
creativity to the will of the time-management machine. Instead,
you have to make space for yourself to explore and play AND you
have to give yourself permission to waste some time in your day.

The Truth About "Wasting Time"
------------------------------

Listen, I realize that different seasons of life either allow for
more time to waste OR force you go non-stop from the moment you
wake up.

I have four kids. I'm met with monster trucks on my bed in the
morning, forgotten lunches midday and a non-stop furry of dinner,
chores and bedtime routines at night.

So please don't hear this as me giving you more stuff for you to
add to the list of things you "should be doing."

My only hope is that as you're thinking about things to improve
upon this next year give yourself some grace to be less efficient
from time to time.

* =F0=9F=8C=85 Stop to watch the sunset
* =F0=9F=8D=BD Take a little bit longer at lunch with a friend
* =F0=9F=92=AD Pause to just think about someone or something
* =F0=9F=9A=B6=F0=9F=8F=BE=E2=80=8D=E2=99=82=EF=B8=8FGo for a walk and try =
to notice something you've never
noticed before

I think you'll find that as you do that you'll actually be able
to get more done and accomplish more than you would otherwise.
AND, even if you don't, you'll definitely find yourself enjoying
it all much more.
