It turns out our idea of "the rat race" and all the negative
feelings that term conjures up have been wrong...way wrong.

How do we know that? SCIENCE =F0=9F=A7=AA=F0=9F=94=AC

In 2014 a team of Dutch scientists (

would do.

They found out the wild animals actually loved the hamster wheel.
A LOT.

Over 200,000 animals ran on the wheel and one tiny little guy
clocked 18 minutes in one session =F0=9F=98=B2

I can only assume he had a mouse marathon he was training for =F0=9F=8E=BD

What does that mean for us?

For the longest time, the image of a hamster trapped inside a
cage doomed to get its exercise on a wheel that goes nowhere has
been the epitome of what it feels like as a human to work in a
meaningless/uninspiring job.

We announce our defiance by declaring, "I'm leaving the rat
race!" Quickly followed by our plans to start our own business or
forge our own path.

But, turns out, rats love the rat race =F0=9F=98=82

Given the option to do anything else, they'd still choose to
spend a pretty hefty amount of their time running in place in a
plastic wheel.

I mean 18 minutes to a creature that is only going to live a
couple of years is like choosing to go on 2 months of vacation
JUST TO RUN.

Just like our furry Stewart Littles counterparts, I think it's
possible for us to find joy in the work we do no matter how
boring it may seem.

P.S. if you've started your own business and quit the normal 9 -
5 job, you know you haven't really lost all "rat race" type work
you were once doing. You just traded it for different "rat race"
type work.

So, the point of the hamster wheel is that really loving what you
do isn't so much about the work itself...it's about YOU the
person doing the work. It's about the perspective you choose to
have.

And, that's great news! That means there's no situation that is
without hope =F0=9F=99=8C=F0=9F=8F=BC

That means:

...if you don't love the work you're doing but can't really
afford to do anything else you can still find joy where you're at

...if you're in a season of life where you don't have the liberty
to just switch things up or start over there is still a lot of
meaning in the most mundane tasks

...if you tried something else but it didn't quite work out the
way you hoped it would it wasn't a waste of time and could
actually open you up to something unexpected and beautiful

Where do we go from here?

I'm not in any way saying you shouldn't pursue your dreams or you
should give up and just learn to be content.

I've actually had multiple careers in my adult life all in
completely different fields where I've had to start from the
bottom a bunch of different times.

But, it's from those experiences I've realized that my happiness
isn't so much about what I'm doing but HOW.

So, yes pursue your dreams. Reach for a new level. Press on and
move up.

But, at the same time, learn the value of the simple. Learn the
reward of the boring and repetitive.

Because, learning to love the rat race is actually a big part of
being able to escape it.
