In 2001=2C I became a first-time entrepreneur when I opened an online baby=
 gift boutique named Blueberry Babies.

Afraid people wouldn=E2=80=99t take me seriously if they knew I was workin=
g alone=2C I built a fa=C3=A7ade to make my business look bigger than just=
 me.

I created email aliases for =E2=80=9Cdepartments=E2=80=9D in my business l=
ike =E2=80=9Cinfo=2C=E2=80=9D =E2=80=9Csupport=2C=E2=80=9D and =E2=80=9Cre=
turns.=E2=80=9D While all the emails went to my inbox=2C doing this made m=
e feel like I was in business for real and quieted my imposter syndrome.

Often=2C I let the phone go to voicemail while I was busy filling orders.=
 But one day=2C I answered=2C =E2=80=9CBlueberry Babies=2C this is Belinda=
=2C=E2=80=9D and the woman on the other end of the phone gushed=2C =E2=80=
=9COh my gosh! It=E2=80=99s you! I can=E2=80=99t believe it. I love your p=
roducts. Your daughter Emily is adorable.=E2=80=9D

It surprised me that she knew I owned the business and remembered my daugh=
ter=E2=80=99s name. She spoke to me like we were friends=2C making me wond=
er if I was missing an opportunity to connect with my customers and build=
 relationships. Maybe my imposter syndrome was wrong about how people woul=
d feel about buying from a small business like mine.

I brought this valuable lesson to my Virtual Assistant business when I sta=
rted RocketGirl Solutions in 2010. Instead of looking for ways to hold mys=
elf separate=2C I looked for ways to connect.

Over the years=2C I have found many ways to do this. Here are a few exampl=
es to inspire you to use this strategy in your business:
1. Voicemail. Instead of hearing a monotone computer-generated voice stati=
ng my phone number=2C people who reach my voicemail hear me cheerfully say=
 in a friendly tone=2C =E2=80=9CHello! This is Belinda Sandor of RocketGir=
l Solutions. Please leave a message=2C and I=E2=80=99ll call you back.=E2=
=80=9D

2. Email. My email address is belinda@rocketgirlsolutions.com=2C not bsand=
or@rocketgirlsolutions.com or belinda.sandor@rocketgirlsolutions.com=2C as=
 is the usual naming convention for email addresses in the corporate world=
=2E Using your first name feels more personal=2C and it=E2=80=99s easier for=
 others to remember.
I also include contact information in the form of an email signature that=
 includes my name=2C cell phone number=2C and a link to schedule time on m=
y calendar. When someone wants to reach me=2C I want to be as accessible a=
s possible.

3. Conversation. When speaking about your work to clients and prospects=2C=
 use everyday language to explain and illustrate your point so that everyo=
ne will understand what you=E2=80=99re talking about and be on the same pa=
ge. There is a tendency to use jargon to show the depth of your knowledge=
 or familiarity with a subject. But doing this won=E2=80=99t help you buil=
d professional relationships=2C even with colleagues.

Being authentic has paid off in more ways than one. It=E2=80=99s helped me=
 quiet my imposter syndrome and taught me that success as a Virtual Assist=
ant isn=E2=80=99t measured by how much tech you know or how fast you can t=
ype. People want to work with people they can relate to and like because t=
hey value connection. Please show them your true self and watch your busin=
ess grow.

01=2C I became a first-time entrepreneur when I opened an online baby gift=
 boutique named Blueberry Babies.<br>

<strong>Afraid people wouldn=E2=80=99t take me seriously if they knew I wa=
s working alone=2C I built a fa=C3=A7ade to make my business look bigger t=
han just me.</strong><br>

I created email aliases for =E2=80=9Cdepartments=E2=80=9D in my business l=

turns.=E2=80=9D While all the emails went to my inbox=2C doing this made m=
e feel like I was in business for real and quieted my imposter syndrome.<b=

Often=2C I let the phone go to voicemail while I was busy filling orders.=
 But one day=2C I answered=2C =E2=80=9CBlueberry Babies=2C this is Belinda=
=2C=E2=80=9D and the woman on the other end of the phone gushed=2C <strong=
>=E2=80=9C<em>Oh my gosh! It=E2=80=99s you! I can=E2=80=99t believe it. I=
 love your products. Your daughter Emily is adorable.</em>=E2=80=9D</stron=
g><br>

It surprised me that she knew I owned the business and remembered my daugh=
ter=E2=80=99s name. She spoke to me like we were friends=2C making me wond=
er if I was missing an opportunity to connect with my customers and build=
 relationships. Maybe my imposter syndrome was wrong about how people woul=
d feel about buying from a small business like mine.<br>
<br>
I brought this valuable lesson to my Virtual Assistant business when I sta=
rted RocketGirl Solutions in 2010. <strong>Instead of looking for ways to=
 hold myself separate=2C I looked for ways to connect.</strong><br>
<br>
Over the years=2C I have found many ways to do this. <strong>Here are a fe=
w examples to inspire you to use this strategy in your business:</strong><=

 my calendar. When someone wants to reach me=2C I want to be as accessible=

ng about your work to clients and prospects=2C use everyday language to ex=
plain and illustrate your point so that everyone will understand what you=
=E2=80=99re talking about and be on the same page. There is a tendency to=
 use jargon to show the depth of your knowledge or familiarity with a subj=
ect. But doing this won=E2=80=99t help you build professional relationship=
s=2C even with colleagues.</li>
