If there's one thing that absolutely paralyzes me from getting
started it's perfectionism.

It's not that I think I won't be able to do a thing. It's more
that I'm pretty sure I won't be the best at it. AND, personally,
if I'm not going to be the best or even come close...I have a
tough time trying at all.

Does this sound familiar? Am I just a whiner?

10 or so years ago we would have seen JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS
once every 5 years at most. Now there's a new compilation video
that surfaces seemingly every day.

Which means: IT FEELS LIKE WHAT'S CONSIDERED GOOD OR ACCEPTABLE
IS INCREASINGLY IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP UP WITH

Which also means that if you struggle with perfectionism it feels
like you don't even have a chance =F0=9F=A4=A6=F0=9F=8F=BC=E2=80=8D=E2=99=
=82=EF=B8=8F

The Nirvana Fallacy

In 1969 an economist named Harold Demsetz (

because "people were going to die in car crashes anyways."

So the logic goes: "Because people are going to die in car
crashes no matter what we do, we might as well not try at all."

That might sound crazy BUT when you think about it, it's exactly
what we do when we hold off on getting started because we're
worried it won't be as good as it possibly could be.

Lessons from an ADHD Community
------------------------------

I was recently diagnosed with ADHD =F0=9F=8E=89=F0=9F=8E=89. On my journey =
to try and
find some things that help me stay focused, I signed up for an
ADHD community.

One of the leaders in that group said something that impacted me
PROFOUNDLY with this very issue. She said:

"If you're having trouble getting started on a task shoot for a B
or B minus."
In other words, don't try to do your best. Allow yourself to
lower the stakes so you feel like you have permission to get
something done even if it's not perfect.

Isn't that why it's called a "rough draft" in the first place!

I actually have to lower the stakes even further. So, I shoot for
like a "D" =F0=9F=A4=B7=F0=9F=8F=BC=E2=80=8D=E2=99=82=EF=B8=8F (a B just fe=
els a little too nerve-wracking,
amiright?)

Not Doing the Best at Your Work is Not a Moral Issue
----------------------------------------------------

The problem is we associate our performance in areas like
business, career or cleanliness with some kind of moral statement
about who we are. BUT, how well you do with your design business
or how clean you keep your kitchen IS NOT A MORAL ISSUE.

When you remove the connection between what you do for work and
how good of a person you are it makes getting things done WAYYY
EASIER.

AND, oddly enough, it also makes doing really well in those areas
WAYYY easier.

It's not far-fetched to assume that you probably feel or have
felt a similar struggle with different things you're trying to
get done (even if you don't have ADHD).

So, here's my encouragement to you:

* It's okay to not do your best
* It's okay if you have limited energy resources and only
PARTIALLY showing up is all you can offer right now
* It's okay to barely get a passing grade

Instead of letting perfectionism keep you from reaching out to
that potential client OR writing that blog post OR finishing that
project show yourself some grace and be okay with not doing it
perfectly.

Then, after some time has passed, come back to it and make it
slightly better.

Do, that again and again and YOU'LL BE THE ONE in those crazy
compilation videos that we all pause and ask ourselves, "How the
heck are they doing that?"
