Hey!

There's something you might be doing with clients that is costing
you a lot of money.

Don't feel bad. Pretty much every agency, business owner,
designer, freelancer, etc. has done it or is currently doing it.
What is it?

YOU'RE LEAVING OUT ALL THE REASONS THEY SHOULDN'T HIRE YOU =F0=9F=A4=94

At first glance that sounds like ridiculousness, right? Aren't we
trying to put our best foot forward?!?

Let me introduce you to Mike Massaro.

=E2=80=8B
Mike is the CEO of Flywire which has been valued at $3.5 billion
and still growing. Before Mike stepped in, the company was having
serious problems.

In 2015, Flywire was hemorrhaging money and at one point only had
6 weeks of cash left to operate or they were going to have to
sell.

How did Mike turn it around? He started telling investors all the
reasons THEY SHOULDN'T invest in the company.

And, listen, we're not talking about how you frame your biggest
weaknesses as strengths in a job interview like Michael did so
eloquently in The Office.

No! He's got a list of like 10 big reasons people shouldn't give
him money with detailed notes on each!

How in the heck did that take Flywire from getting turned down by
investors again and again to raising $12.6 million in series B
funding? Simple.

When people are being sold to they're constantly asking
themselves, "What's the catch?"

And, when YOU GIVE IT TO THEM rather than make them guess, they
come up with solutions on their own.

Why Does This Work?
-------------------

First, the psychological reason why this can help you land
clients.

There's something called Negativity Bias at work here.

You're probably pretty aware of Negativity Bias even if you've
never heard the technical term before.

Negativity Bias is the reason why it's super difficult for me to
think of 15 things to be thankful for at the end of the day BUT
super easy to think of 15+ things I'm frustrated about right now.

Is that me just being a whiner again or can you relate? =F0=9F=A4=A6=F0=9F=
=8F=BC=E2=80=8D=E2=99=82=EF=B8=8F

Evidence would suggest we might all be naturally inclined to
remember AND LOOK FOR what's wrong much much more than what's
right.

It's a bit of an evolutionary safeguard.

The lion hiding around the rock is more likely to stop the
evolutionary process than the pretty flower around that same
rock. So, we tend to give more brain space to the lion than the
flower.

Clients do it, too. They just aren't doing it with lions or
flowers. They're doing it with the stuff they're choosing to buy.

Try to remember the last time someone tried to sell you something
in person. There was a question floating around in the back of
your mind:

"What are they not telling me?"
The more that question sits there the more it gets inflated or
feels bigger than it probably is.

So, what Mike did and what you can do with clients is JUST TELL
THEM. Remove the burden of them having to try to figure it out.

When you do that you instantly gain trust AND it does another
thing. They'll be able to easily tell whether or not YOU'RE THE
RIGHT PERSON FOR THEM.

The Marketing Mirror
--------------------

Another question people ask themselves before they buy something
is "Is this product or service for someone like me?"

Or "Can I see myself in this product?" It's what I like to call
the Marketing Mirror.

The Marketing Mirror is the reason why people are so passionate
about using Apple vs. Android products. Or feel so strongly
pulled toward Vitamin Water or its punk rock counterpart Liquid
Death.

They feel like they identify with those products at a core level
of who they are.

AND, nothing can help someone figure out whether you're the right
designer to hire for their job like telling them all the reasons
they shouldn't.

In a matter of seconds, they'll be able to decide whether those
things don't bother them OR whether they're important.

THIS IS A BIG DEAL.

You're not trying to get EVERYONE to hire you. You're trying to
get THE RIGHT PEOPLE to hire you.

You don't want to waste your time with clients who aren't a good
fit. They'll end up costing you more than they're worth AND
they'll absolutely drain you of the energy you need to keep your
business moving forward.

How Does This All Play Out?
---------------------------

Hear me out. I'm not trying to tell you to start every potential
client call by listing out all of your deficiencies.

BUT!

...if someone asks you to do something you're not confident
doing: TELL THEM.

...if a client's timeline is going to be too hard for you to pull
off: BE HONEST.

...if you're unsure about something they want done: LET THEM
KNOW.

Don't apologize for your limitations. Everyone has those. And, if
a client demands that you ignore your limitations and do what
they want anyway RUN FOR THE HILLS. They will not be worth
whatever amount of money they offer.

90% of the times I've done this with potential clients they STILL
hire me.

And, the ones that didn't end up hiring me thanked me for my
honesty and told me they'd have other projects that were a better
fit in the future.

Sure, you have to be okay with potentially losing an opportunity.
BUT, I guarantee that if you do lose it, there will be another
one around the corner that is likely a better fit.

So, my friend, don't try to paint some perfect picture just to
win a project. That's exhausting, AND in the long run, it just
doesn't work.

Just be yourself.

Be honest.

You'll be thrilled at just how many people are looking to hire
someone just like you.
