Hey!

In my early days of building a design business, I suffered from
the ever too common "feast or famine" cycle of clients.

You know what I'm talking about, right?

Either,

...You're completely swamped with wayyyy too much work for one
person, staying up late hours to try and hit deadlines that are
well outside of the bounds of reasonableness.

...OR you're freaking out because you don't know if you'll be
able to land another project any time soon and you can't sleep
because visions of not being able to pay your bills keep
repeating in your brain the moment you lay down to sleep.

So, I started asking myself, "How can I break out of this endless
cycle and finally start getting a decent night's sleep?" Because
apparently both feast AND famine impact my nighttime routine in
similar ways.

There has to be a better way, right? It seems like there are
plenty of designers out there that have clients lined up months
in advance.

So, what was I doing wrong?

I think it boils down to an age-old nemesis of mine:
procrastination =F0=9F=A4=A6=F0=9F=8F=BC=E2=80=8D=E2=99=82=EF=B8=8F

Now and Not Now
---------------

I suffer from only having two timeframes: "Now" and "Not Now."

Giving me a deadline that's more than a couple of weeks in the
future is almost worthless. Why? Because it's "Not Now."

You may think reading this email that it was written well in
advance, checked for errors, and put through a few rounds of
revisions. You'd be wrong.

As soon as I was done typing, I hit send. AT BEST, it went out
the next day =F0=9F=98=82

This has made me great for being able to adapt and pivot when
life throws me a curveball BUT it's made me horrible for thinking
too far ahead to my future.

This dichotomous approach to living has resulted in some pretty
interesting conundrums including my waxing and waning between too
much work and no work at all as a designer.

So, I realized early on that the only way I was going to get out
of the horrible client cycle was to reserve a little bit of time
every single day to look for new clients and then nurture them in
the form of follow-ups or emails or content of some kind.

In other words, if you want to set yourself up to have clients
waiting in the wings for you to get started on their project
after you finish the one you're currently working on, you have to
start PLANTING SEEDS FOR THAT TODAY.

You have to do things like

...write new blog posts

...spend time building relationships in communities

...developing a new skill

A friend of mine once told me that he spends about 50% of his
week working on finding new projects and the other 50% actually
doing project work.

Sounds awesome.

The problem is that it's so easy to get sucked into the "Now" of
each day and completely neglect the "Not Now" of tomorrow. My
problem isn't knowing what I need to be doing RIGHT NOW it's
actually doing it.

After all, the project you have right in front of you is what is
paying your bills. So, why not get completely caught up into it
and do the best dang job you can do? Forget all that other stuff.

So, how do we break the cycle?

The Psychology Behind Procrastination
-------------------------------------

In 2010 psychologists studied a group of students and how well
they scored on 2 separate exams in their class. They tracked
things like test scores and how much they prepared.

Half of the class went on to do better on the second exam despite
feeling like they procrastinated too much on the first and the
other half didn't.

What was the difference between the ones that did better on the
second exam and the ones that didn't?

Self-forgiveness.

The students who were able to forgive themselves for their poor
performance and preparation on the first exam were able to shake
it off and do better on the next exam.

Why is that?

Because, procrastination is MUCH LESS ABOUT TIME MANAGEMENT and
much more about HOW YOU FEEL.

I wasn't putting off the work I knew I needed to do because I'm
bad at managing my time. I was pushing it off because I was
afraid I wouldn't be able actually get any more clients.

I was worried that maybe all the projects I'd gotten up to that
point were a fluke and the project I was working on currently
could very well be the last.

Your ability to plant seeds for tomorrow DEPENDS ON YOU BELIEVING
THAT YOU'LL BE ABLE TO REAP A HARVEST FROM WHAT YOU SOW TODAY.

I know how hard it is to face those limiting beliefs. It's much
easier to get sucked into the work that's right in front of you.
I do it. We all do it.

But, I know for sure that if you quiet those inner voices, put
one foot in front of the other, and start making small
investments of your time today for a better outcome tomorrow, it
will pay off again and again.

So, what are you doing?

Stop reading this email.

Go write that blog.

Go post that image on social.

Go reach out to that new inquiry.

Trust me, it won't be easier to do those things tomorrow AND I
guarantee that your "Not Now" self will look back to your "Now"
self and be grateful you did.
