Thank you to=C2=A0Don Meade=C2=A0for this great question. Upon reflection, =
my answer hasn=E2=80=99t changed since the age of 16. =C2=A0 What motivates=
 me most in life is trying to solve unacceptable issues. At 16, I couldn=E2=
=80=99t accept the brutality and senselessness of the Vietnam War, so I sta=
rted=C2=A0Student Magazine=C2=A0to protest the war and report on the atroci=
ties it was inflicting. I wanted the magazine to challenge the stale public=
ations of=C2=A0the day and cover issues that really mattered to young peopl=
e, such as abortion bans, outdated, education models, LGBTQI+ discriminatio=
n, and so forth.=C2=A0 Now, at the age of 73, solving unacceptable issues i=
s still my main source of motivation and it is why we launched=C2=A0Virgin =
Unite=C2=A020 years ago. As a relentless optimist, I believe there isn=E2=
=80=99t a single issue we cannot combat in our lifetimes, if we dedicate en=
ough energy to it. This is what gets me up in the morning, and it=E2=80=99s=
 what sometimes keeps me up at night too. However, it=E2=80=99s important t=
o not get pulled in so many directions that you have no direction at all. A=
nd so, I wanted to write more on the specific issues that I focus on the mo=
st, with endless momentum from Virgin Unite=C2=A0and the wonderful Virgin G=
roup team. Criminal justice reform=C2=A0 =C2=A0I believe that people should=
n=E2=80=99t be judged by their darkest moment in life, and societies can=E2=
=80=99t prosper without mercy. In my mind, penal systems need to shift thei=
r focus away from punishment and toward rehabilitation. People need to be g=
iven the best possible=C2=A0chance of rebuilding their lives and escaping t=
he cycle of re-offending. This is why we=C2=A0work with the=C2=A0Responsibl=
e Business Initiative for Justice=C2=A0(RBIJ) and other organisations to ad=
vocate for rehabilitative justice systems, fair checks on criminal records,=
 ending cash bail (which cruelly discriminate against people experiencing p=
overty), and abolishing the death penalty. I=E2=80=99m also immensely proud=
 of the endless work that Virgin Unite does to help reform systems that tra=
p vulnerable=C2=A0people in destructive cycles of penalty and poverty. Toge=
ther, we are all working to bring fair chance hiring into mainstream busine=
ss practices. It=E2=80=99s a powerful way in which all businesses can get i=
nvolved in criminal justice reform.=C2=A0 One area of reform I am particula=
rly passionate about is ending the death penalty. It is an inhumane, ineffe=
ctive and error-prone form of punishment. Why do we kill people who kill pe=
ople to show people that killing people is wrong? Some people claim the dea=
th penalty deters crime, yet nothing could be further from the truth =E2=80=
=93 and study after study refutes this. Look anywhere in the=C2=A055 countr=
ies that retain the practice: the death penalty doesn=E2=80=99t make commun=
ities safer, it has no noticeable impact on crime rates, and it wastes reso=
urces that could be better used elsewhere.=C2=A0=C2=A0 One of the most frus=
trating aspects of the death penalty is the well-documented risk of executi=
ng innocent people. For every eight people executed in the US, one person h=
as been found to be innocent. This is an unacceptable margin of error, part=
icularly when the stake at play is a human life. This is another area where=
 businesses can really take a stand, which is why we helped RBIJ launch Bus=
iness Leaders against the Death Penalty, alongside many business leaders li=
ke Paul Polman. The campaign has brought together more than 250 notable lea=
ders including Sheryl Sandberg, Alan Jope, and Marc Benioff to call for an =
end to capital punishment all around the world. Over the years, we=E2=80=99=
ve written countless letters and had many tense phone calls to plead mercy =
for people on death row, and I really struck a nerve when took on Singapore=
=E2=80=99s government over its horrific use of the death penalty for non-vi=
olent drug offences. We don=E2=80=99t always succeed, but I hope that our w=
ork will ultimately help people and governments understand why its time to =
end the death penalty for good. Ending the War on Drugs The war on drugs ca=
nnot be won, but it can be ended. While the global trade in illicit drugs h=
as soared to upwards of $400 billion, communities remain ravaged by drug-re=
lated violence, prisons are overcrowded with people sentenced for simple dr=
ug possession and personal use, addiction is rampant, and billions of dolla=
rs has been wasted in fighting an impossible fight. =C2=A0If the focus shif=
ted to decriminalising and regulating recreational drugs, it could create s=
eismic shifts in harm reduction, public health, public spending, prison sta=
tistics, drug-related violence, death, and more. Governments need to wrestl=
e control from criminal networks by creating legalised and regulated market=
s. The health risks of drug use and the dramatically rising overdose death =
toll in many countries often make people feel nervous about decriminalisati=
on. However, the failed war on drugs has only increased these health risks =
and exacerbated the dramatic outcomes we see. Prohibition has driven the ma=
rket towards riskier, more potent, and contaminated substances with unregul=
ated strengths, ingredients, and production methods. Furthermore, people ar=
e pushed to consume drugs in unsafe environments, leading to greater risk o=
f harm. It=E2=80=99s time we wake up to the fact that the so-called war on =
drugs is a war on people, which is what led me to become a member of The Gl=
obal Commission on Drug Policy.=C2=A0The commission does a fantastic job in=
 creating informed, evidence-based discussions about humane and effective w=
ays to reduce the harm caused by drugs and drug policies. My fellow Commiss=
ioners and I have spent years making the case=C2=A0that no one should be cr=
iminalised, marginalised, or stigmatised for possession and personal use of=
 illicit drugs. When problems arise, drug addiction should be treated as a =
public health issue, not a responsibility of already overburdened criminal =
justice systems. It=E2=80=99s wonderful to see the tide shifting in both po=
licy and opinion on this issue! If you=E2=80=99re unsure where you stand, I=
 would suggest reading through the commission=E2=80=99s reports and opinion=
 pieces. LGBTQI+ rights LGBTQI+ equality was one of the first issues I camp=
aigned about as a teenager. At 17, I launched the Student Advisory Centre a=
fter discovering a huge demand for young people wanting advice on topics in=
cluding sexuality, health and relationships. Many ostracised gay people cam=
e to us seeking support and ways to meet other gay people and feel part of =
a community. The fact that someone could be shunned, bullied, discriminated=
 against, thrown into prison, or even face the death penalty (as is sadly s=
till the case in quite a few countries) for same-sex relationships is compl=
etely unacceptable. Business can play a big role here, which is why we supp=
orted the I helped launch of the wonderful organisation=C2=A0Open for Busin=
ess, as a business-led coalition that makes the economic case for LGBTQI+ i=
nclusion. From creating safe and inclusive workplaces to putting pressure o=
n governments that persecute LGBTQI+ people, joining coalitions like Open F=
or Business and raising awareness through meaningful Pride festivities =E2=
=80=93 there=E2=80=99s so much that businesses can do. At Virgin, I=E2=80=
=99m so proud of the work our companies and Virgin Unite are doing, which i=
ncludes implementing gender-neutral uniform policies, Pride flights, effect=
ive partnerships, inclusion networks, advocacy efforts, and beyond. Re-defi=
ning dyslexia and neurodiversity I am dyslexic, and I don=E2=80=99t shy awa=
y from talking about it. In fact, I want businesses around the world to und=
erstand the unique value of hiring dyslexics; and I want society to underst=
and that dyslexia is just a different way of seeing the world, a different =
way of processing information, and an opportunity to come up with great ide=
as.=C2=A0To bring this message across, we started working with Made By Dysl=
exia many years ago and it=E2=80=99s proven to be a very impactful partners=
hip. Together, we worked with LinkedIn to change the Dictionary.com definit=
ion of =E2=80=98dyslexia=E2=80=99, encouraged LinkedIn to add =E2=80=98Dysl=
exic Thinking=E2=80=99 to its list of recognised skills, developed Dyslexic=
 Thinking training on LinkedIn Learning, delved into the aggregated power o=
f dyslexia and AI, and much more. Beyond dyslexia, I believe that all forms=
 of neurodiversity should be embraced by employers, education systems and w=
ider society. We need to reframe neurodiversity, and ensure that neurodiver=
se thinkers have the support they need to reach their full potential in lif=
e. This is why we invested in auticon back in 2016, and have proudly suppor=
ted their teams ever since. auticon is a fantastic IT consulting business a=
nd social enterprise that employs adults on the autism spectrum, and places=
 them in permanent roles as IT consultants. auticon is now the largest auti=
stic-majority company in the world, and works across 15 countries. Brillian=
t. I truly believe that the world needs a neurodiverse workforce=C2=A0to=C2=
=A0help solve some of=C2=A0the=C2=A0big problems of our time, so it=E2=80=
=99s brilliant to see more and more leaders catching onto this too. =C2=A0 =
Ukraine Promoting peace is how my advocacy journey began, as I protested th=
e Vietnam War on the streets on London and through the pages of Student Mag=
azine. On the eve of the Iraq War in 2003, I organised for Nelson Mandela a=
nd Kofi Annan to fly to Baghdad and try to convince Saddam Hussein to step =
down in the interests of his people. Sadly, the war broke out the week they=
 were due to travel. Frustrated by this experience, Peter Gabriel and I cam=
e up with the idea for a group of respected global leaders to come together=
 and promote human rights and peaceful conflict resolution. This led to the=
 launch of =C2=A0The Elders with Nelson Mandela at the helm and including v=
isionary leaders such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, President Jimmy Carter, K=
ofi Annan and Gra=C3=A7a Machel. It=E2=80=99s through my work with The Elde=
rs that I was keen to speak out on the war against Ukraine. When Russia ann=
exed Crimea in 2014, I was worried by the general apathy that surrounded th=
e issue. I visited Ukraine in September 2014 to encourage leaders, business=
es, and global citizens to take it seriously. Eight years later, after Puti=
n=E2=80=99s full-scale invasion, I was shocked and horrified. I pushed for =
Western governments to swiftly deliver advanced weapons and for global busi=
nesses to show unwavering support for Ukraine. We must remember that Ukrain=
e's troops are defending far more than their own sovereignty and national i=
dentity. They are fighting and dying so the rest of us don't have to. Since=
 the war broke out, we have visited the country multiple times and met with=
 President Zelensky to understand how businesses can better support the cou=
ntry. =C2=A0As a result, I became an ambassador to President Zelensky=E2=80=
=99s UNITED24 fundraising platform, and worked with Virgin Unite to partner=
 with the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and the Bridgeway Foundation to supp=
ort some brilliant projects including the SuperHumans Center =E2=80=93 whic=
h is a world-class medical facility for Ukrainians wounded in the war and t=
he incredible organisation GEM that is getting relief to those who need it =
the most. I was also thrilled to host a dinner with UNITED24 at our Virgin =
Hotels property in New York, which raised $635,000 to rebuild a school in M=
arianivka. Liev S. (get spelling) also joined me as a fellow Ambassador for=
 United24. His work to get funds to local Ukrainian charities through BlueC=
heck is tremendous. In this war of attrition, Ukraine=E2=80=99s allies must=
 double down on their commitments, and do everything they can to ensure tha=
t Ukraines=E2=80=99s brave people can repel Russia=E2=80=99s aggression, pr=
otect their sovereignty, and rebuild their country. Elevating the Planetary=
 Boundary Science Humanity is=C2=A0not=C2=A0on track to meet the goals of t=
he 2015 Paris Climate Agreement and the cost to future generations is risin=
g with every passing day of inaction. The=C2=A0Planetary Boundaries Framewo=
rk=C2=A0was first developed in 2009 by a global team of the world=E2=80=99s=
 leading scientists and led by Professor=C2=A0Johan Rockstr=C3=B6m=C2=A0of =
the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research=C2=A0-=C2=A0identifies ni=
ne critical systems needed to regulate the health of the entire planet.=C2=
=A0From climate change to freshwater use,=C2=A0biodiversity=C2=A0loss to ch=
emical pollution and the release of novel entities, the boundaries define w=
hat Rockstr=C3=B6m calls the =E2=80=9Csafe operating space=E2=80=9D for hum=
anity.=C2=A0Veer too far beyond these limits and we risk causing irreversib=
le damage to the very ecosystems that sustain life. I was thrilled to join=
=C2=A0Virgin Unite=C2=A0and several partners for the =C2=A0launch of=C2=A0P=
lanetary Guardians=C2=A0last year. The Guardians are an independent group o=
f leaders, working together to elevate the planetary boundary science, and =
make the boundaries a measurement and operating framework to inform collect=
ive global action. The work of Planetary Guardians, can help to change our =
current course and secure Earth=E2=80=99s future, but it will require const=
ant vigilance and radical=C2=A0collaboration=C2=A0from the rest of us. Ther=
e are many other issues that deeply concern me and so I use advocacy, inves=
tments, partnerships and outreach to try to solve them. It is only by belie=
ving that humanity can solve the issues we=E2=80=99re up against that we ca=
n stay motivated and empowered to do it. And so, this is what motivates me =

their focus away from punishment and toward rehabilitation. People need to =
be given the best possible&nbsp;chance of rebuilding their lives and escapi=
ng the cycle of re-offending. This is why we&nbsp;work with the&nbsp;<a hre=

ce</a>&nbsp;(RBIJ) and other organisations to advocate for rehabilitative j=
ustice systems, fair checks on criminal records, ending cash bail (which cr=
uelly discriminate against people experiencing poverty), and abolishing the=
 death penalty. I=E2=80=99m also immensely proud of the endless work that V=
irgin Unite does to help reform systems that trap vulnerable&nbsp;people in=
 destructive cycles of penalty and poverty. Together, we are all working to=
 bring fair chance hiring into mainstream business practices. It=E2=80=99s =
a powerful way in which all businesses can get involved in criminal justice=
 reform.&nbsp;</p><p style=3D"margin: 0; font-weight: 400; margin-top: 0.8e=
m; font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;">One area of reform I am particularly =
passionate about is ending the death penalty. It is an inhumane, ineffectiv=
e and error-prone form of punishment. Why do we kill people who kill people=
 to show people that killing people is wrong? Some people claim the death p=
enalty deters crime, yet nothing could be further from the truth =E2=80=93 =
and study after study refutes this. Look anywhere in the&nbsp;<a target=3D"=
_blank" href=3D"https://www.amnesty.org/en/what-we-do/death-penalty/" rel=
=3D"nofollow noopener" style=3D"text-decoration: none; -webkit-text-size-ad=

t all around the world. Over the years, we=E2=80=99ve written countless let=
ters and had many tense phone calls to plead mercy for people on death row,=

m; line-height: 1.5;">The war on drugs cannot be won, but it can be ended. =
While the global trade in illicit drugs has soared to upwards of $400 billi=
on, communities remain ravaged by drug-related violence, prisons are overcr=
owded with people sentenced for simple drug possession and personal use, ad=
diction is rampant, and billions of dollars has been wasted in fighting an =
impossible fight.</p><p style=3D"margin: 0; font-weight: 400; margin-top: 0=
.8em; font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.5;">&nbsp;If the focus shifted to decr=
iminalising and regulating recreational drugs, it could create seismic shif=
ts in harm reduction, public health, public spending, prison statistics, dr=
ug-related violence, death, and more. Governments need to wrestle control f=
rom criminal networks by creating legalised and regulated markets. The heal=
th risks of drug use and the dramatically rising overdose death toll in man=
y countries often make people feel nervous about decriminalisation. However=
, the failed war on drugs has only increased these health risks and exacerb=
ated the dramatic outcomes we see. Prohibition has driven the market toward=
s riskier, more potent, and contaminated substances with unregulated streng=
ths, ingredients, and production methods. Furthermore, people are pushed to=
 consume drugs in unsafe environments, leading to greater risk of harm.</p>=
