The VA Buzz

Every day=2C for the last three weeks=2C I=E2=80=99ve spent at least an ho=
ur and a half picking blueberries off the bushes in our front yard.

My husband Greg and I estimate we have approximately 104 pounds of frozen=
 blueberries in our new Frigidaire chest freezer and at least that much mo=
re still on the branches ripening daily.

Having never picked blueberries before=2C when I started out=2C I held a b=
owl in one hand and placed the blueberries in it with the other. But I was=
 dropping blueberries like crazy and almost fell off the ladder trying to=
 balance the bowl.

My next strategy was to put a tarp under the bushes and pull the blueberri=
es off the branches and onto the tarp. That worked to get the blueberries=
 off the branches=2C but I didn=E2=80=99t enjoy picking through them on my=
 hands and knees=2C along with the bugs=2C sticks=2C and leaves that had a=
lso landed on my tarp.

Next=2C I bought a =E2=80=9Charvesting apron (https://thevaconnection.us12=
=2Elist-manage.com/track/click?u=3D329129029ab35cbb26ae77f1c&id=3Dabcb86191d=
&e=3D1faa567b0d) =E2=80=9D (who knew?). It freed up both hands and elimina=
ted the need for the bowl. It was a game-changer.

I devised a system for freezing the blueberries as well=2C rotating them i=
n and out of the freezer on trays before placing them in bags printed with=
 the date they were picked.

Having lots of time to think while blueberry-picking each day=2C I started=
 to notice the parallels between blueberry picking and starting a Virtual=
 Assistant business:
1. There was a learning curve. I tried several methods for picking the ber=
ries before deciding what worked. Instead of getting frustrated by what wa=
sn=E2=80=99t working=2C I used my energy to get creative and figure out im=
provements I could make.
So often=2C when starting a business=2C we want everything done immediatel=
y and without struggle. But here's the thing=E2=80=94the learning comes fr=
om the struggle. If someone handed me a five-year-old Virtual Assistant bu=
siness filled with clients on day one=2C I wouldn=E2=80=99t know what to d=
o. Experience teaches us. Action teaches us. Don=E2=80=99t skip or wish aw=
ay the most useful part of the process.

2. It takes effort. All 104 pounds of blueberries we=E2=80=99ve collected=
 so far were plucked off the bushes=2C one berry at a time. The same appli=
es to building your business=2C getting new clients=2C and growing your em=
ail list.
Make sure you=E2=80=99re spending enough time at your desk working on your=
 business. Just because you don=E2=80=99t have enough clients (if any)=2C=
 there=E2=80=99s plenty to do to get them rolling in the door. This will a=
lso help you build your ability to focus while working from home.

3. The unexpected will happen. While picking fruit=2C I met a gigantic ora=
nge spider that stopped me in my tracks. But instead of derailing the whol=
e project and running across the front yard screaming=2C I let go of the b=
ranch he was sitting on and moved to the other side of the bush.
Roadblocks are everywhere in life: flat tires=2C sick kids=2C spilled milk=
=2C and gigantic orange spiders. Don=E2=80=99t let them stop you. Successf=
ul Virtual Assistants know how to navigate life and stay on track.

There is nothing better than living the VA lifestyle. As a lifelong learne=
r=2C I get to stretch my brain and=2C thanks to time flexibility=2C I get=
 to design my days.

While getting started can feel daunting occasionally=2C by giving yourself=
 some grace and taking things one at a time=2C you can build a successful=
 and sustainable business to fuel the rest of your working life.

 day=2C for the last three weeks=2C I=E2=80=99ve spent at least an hour an=
d a half picking blueberries off the bushes in our front yard.<br>
<br>
<strong>My husband Greg and I estimate we have approximately 104 pounds of=
 frozen blueberries</strong>&nbsp;in our new Frigidaire chest freezer and=
 at least that much more still on the branches ripening daily.<br>
<br>
Having never picked blueberries before=2C when I started out=2C I held a b=
owl in one hand and placed the blueberries in it with the other. But I was=
 dropping blueberries like crazy and almost fell off the ladder trying to=
 balance the bowl.<br>
<br>
My next strategy was to put a tarp under the bushes and pull the blueberri=
es off the branches and onto the tarp. That worked to get the blueberries=
 off the branches=2C but I didn=E2=80=99t enjoy picking through them on my=
 hands and knees=2C along with the bugs=2C sticks=2C and leaves that had a=
lso landed on my tarp.<br>
<br>
Next=2C I bought a =E2=80=9C<a data-saferedirecturl=3D"https://www.google.=
com/url?q=3Dhttps://thevaconnection.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u%3D3=

 and eliminated the need for the bowl. It was a game-changer.</strong><br>

I devised a system for freezing the blueberries as well=2C rotating them i=
n and out of the freezer on trays before placing them in bags printed with=
 the date they were picked.<br>
<br>
Having lots of time to think while blueberry-picking each day=2C&nbsp;<str=
ong>I started to notice the parallels between blueberry picking and starti=
ng a Virtual Assistant business:</strong></p>

webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><strong>There was a learning curve.</stron=
g>&nbsp;I tried several methods for picking the berries before deciding wh=
at worked. Instead of getting frustrated by what&nbsp;<em>wasn=E2=80=99t</=
em>&nbsp;working=2C I used my energy to get creative and figure out improv=
ements I could make.<br>
=09<br>
=09So often=2C when starting a business=2C we want everything done immedia=
tely and without struggle.&nbsp;<strong>But here's the thing=E2=80=94the l=
earning&nbsp;<em>comes from</em>&nbsp;the struggle.</strong>&nbsp;If someo=
ne handed me a five-year-old Virtual Assistant business filled with client=
s on day one=2C I wouldn=E2=80=99t know what to do. Experience teaches us.=
 Action teaches us. Don=E2=80=99t skip or wish away the most useful part o=
f the process.<br>
=09&nbsp;</li>
=09<li style=3D"mso-line-height-rule: exactly;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-=
webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><strong>It takes effort.</strong>&nbsp;All=
 104 pounds of blueberries we=E2=80=99ve collected so far were plucked off=
 the bushes=2C one berry at a time. The same applies to building your busi=
ness=2C getting new clients=2C and growing your email list.<br>
=09<br>
=09Make sure you=E2=80=99re spending enough time at your desk working on&n=
bsp;<em>your business</em>. Just because you don=E2=80=99t have enough cli=
ents (if any)=2C there=E2=80=99s plenty to do to get them rolling in the d=
oor. This will also help you build your ability to focus while working fro=
m home.<br>
=09&nbsp;</li>
=09<li style=3D"mso-line-height-rule: exactly;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-=
webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><strong>The unexpected will happen.&nbsp;<=
/strong>While picking fruit=2C I met a&nbsp;<em>gigantic</em>&nbsp;orange=
 spider that stopped me in my tracks. But instead of derailing the whole p=
roject and running across the front yard screaming=2C I let go of the bran=
ch he was sitting on and moved to the other side of the bush.<br>
=09<br>
=09<strong>Roadblocks are everywhere in life: flat tires=2C sick kids=2C s=
pilled milk=2C and gigantic orange spiders. Don=E2=80=99t let them stop yo=
u. Successful Virtual Assistants know how to navigate life and stay on tra=
ck.</strong></li>
