You=E2=80=99ve likely heard that when starting as a Virtual Assistant=2C y=
ou need to spread the word about your business to be successful. And netwo=
rking is a great way to do that.

But maybe you=E2=80=99ve never networked before=2C and the thought of it s=
ounds terrifying. I get it.

Here=E2=80=99s how I used to think about networking:

First=2C you change into uncomfortable professional clothing and leave you=
r house (if that=E2=80=99s not bad enough). Then=2C as you enter the event=
=2C you realize you don=E2=80=99t know anyone=2C and you freeze. You feel=
 out of place and look around=2C comparing yourself to others and coming u=
p short. You talk to one or two people=2C fumbling=2C uncertain what to sa=
y=2C and feel like a fool. The entire experience is miserable=2C and you g=
o home=2C dejected=2C thinking you don=E2=80=99t have what it takes.

Sound familiar? Let=E2=80=99s change the narrative.

First=2C let=E2=80=99s define networking.

Networking is the action or process of interacting with others to exchange=
 information and develop professional or social contacts.

Networking is not selling; it=E2=80=99s not trying to impress someone; it=
=E2=80=99s not about being perfect. It=E2=80=99s talking to people about w=
hat you=E2=80=99re up to professionally.

That=E2=80=99s it. Take the pressure off.

To succeed in networking=2C you must be good at describing your work and r=
eady when someone asks. To do that=2C you must prepare ahead of time and p=
ractice out loud. Here=E2=80=99s the template I suggest you use when descr=
ibing your work:

I=E2=80=99m a Virtual Assistant. I work with entrepreneurs and small busin=
esses and help them with the admin pieces of their business=2C like email=
 newsletters=2C website updates=2C and PowerPoint presentations. #STOPTALK=
ING

And then listen. And what you=E2=80=99ll usually hear is=2C =E2=80=9CWow=
=2C that=E2=80=99s awesome!=E2=80=9D And you=E2=80=99ll know that a seed h=
as been planted either for them to hire you or spread the word to their fr=
iends and colleagues because you kept it simple and easy to understand. Yo=
u=E2=80=99re having a conversation=2C not selling. It=E2=80=99s much easie=
r than we make it.

With some mindset management=2C practice=2C and prep work=2C you can confi=
dently enter networking events like a pro=2C make new friends=2C and grow=
 your business. Give it a try.
