Hey!

Listen, first off, I know it's been a while. I was trying to find
a good time to email you all between all the other emails coming
from Showit accounts.

In an attempt to avoid overloading you with too many Showit
emails I ended up never emailing you. So, pardon me for taking so
long.

AND, here's to not caring so much about whether or not this will
interfere with other Showit emails AND a hope that since it's
coming at you on a Friday there won't be any other emails from us
in your inbox.

Have you ever heard it said that, "the definition of insanity is
doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different
results?"

I have. Heck I've repeated it and touted it as sage advice for
folks who tend to find themselves caught in a habit loop hoping
for different outcomes time and time again. Which happens to be
me very very often.

But, lately, I've realized that not only is this little
oft-repeated quip bad advice, it's actually dead wrong.

The definition of insanity is NOT, IN FACT, doing the same thing
over and over again and expecting different results.

That's the definition of practice.

Try to imagine me going to my daughter who's currently learning
guitar and telling her as she's in the middle of practicing
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida for the 50th time today and saying, "You look
insane doing that."

And, yet, for some reason we question our own sanity when we find
ourselves in similar situations in our businesses.

* When you take on too much work and find yourself stressed
beyond belief
"Why did I do this again? What's wrong with me?"

* When you don't speak up after a client asks to add an 8th page
to the 5 page website you agreed to build them
"Why can't I just say something instead of letting them take
advantage of me? Am I crazy?"

* When you underbid a project because you're worried the client
won't say yes to your actual price
"Why do I keep doing this? Surely a better designer wouldn't let
this happen!?"

Listen to me...you're not insane. You're not failing. You're not
a bad business owner.

You're just practicing.
-----------------------

You have your whole life to practice, fail and get better. See
those situations for what they really are: practice sessions.

Sure, you didn't do well last time. And, no, you shouldn't let
them happen again. BUT, here's the good news.

You'll get another chance...probably very soon.

I'm not telling you to stay in unhealthy scenarios or behaviors
because "you're just practicing." This concept could definitely
be taken out of context.

But, in areas that you find yourself repeating and failing more
times than you'd like, let me encourage you. It's gonna get
easier. You're gonna get better. Trying and failing and then
trying again is a part of what it means to grow.

In fact, one sure sign that you're not growing is that you don't
feel any sense of frustration at all.

Building a business has this way of bringing out every single
insecurity you've ever had in your life. It can be down right
excruciating. But, it's worth it.

Would it be easier to NOT DO IT? Of course.

It's way less stress.

Way less frustrating scenarios.

Way less moments that you're not kicking yourself for repeating
the same dang mistake for the 15th time.

And, way less personal transformation.

So, stay the course, friend. Keep practice and when you find
yourself messing up on something you've messed up before just
remind yourself:

"That was good practice."
