Hey!

I was at a high school football game a couple of weeks ago. There
to support my daughter who was cheering from the sidelines.

They were performing a special half-time dance, and she was so
excited. I was too. I love seeing my kids do things they love.

As the second quarter finished and the cheer team lined up to
perform something took me by surprise. The song they used for the
dance was a song that was popular when I was in high school.

That might not be to big of a deal for you but I went to high
school almost 30 years ago!

I started thinking, "If this were MY high school football game,
I'd be embarrassed by a half-time performance set to the songs my
parents rocked out to in high school."

But, not my kids. In fact, I find them randomly singing tunes
that were on the top 40 charts when I was young.

Why Hasn't There Been a Creative Breakthrough in the Last 30
Years?

If you think back from the early 2000's going backwards every era
was marked by shifts in the creative community.

1990's - Grunge music or even the more subtle Global Village
Coffehouse (GVC) aesthetic

1980's - New Wave or Synth Pop music and airbrushed pop art

You could keep going and going from there!

But what about from the early 2000's until now? It's harder to
see any kind of shift in style or any breakthrough in creativity
that made everyone take a collective gasp and think, "THIS IS THE
NEXT THING!"

Even our movies are recycled hits from 40 years ago!

Why is that?

You might argue that instead of creative breakthroughs these past
few decades have been marked by technological breakthroughs. And,
that would be true. BUT, I actually think that technology is
somewhat the reason for the more muted nuances between
generations.

I think as the world has become more connected we've begun to
lose the environment that a lot of those cultural shifts came
from.

Think about it.

Every new trend started in obscurity. It started from a group of
folks that would typically be considered outcasts. They started
doing things that got them ridiculed by the popular majority.
But, it wasn't a big deal. You could ignore the haters because
after all you didn't have a ton of interaction with them.

But, now, it's almost impossible to live in obscurity. You can't
do anything without a borage of hateful comments that wears you
down and almost forces you to give in.

Even if you're not the one putting yourself out there. Someone
will figure out a way to snap a picture or video and put it up
online for all the world to see and ridicule.

As a result, we've lost our willingness to be different and stand
out. We've lost the desire to truly express ourselves creatively
for fear of repercussions or backlash.

But, here's the thing. The world needs your weirdness. The world
needs your unique perspective. The world needs your special bend
of creativity that only you can provide.

So, here's my charge. Do something this week that makes you
excited creatively.

Build a website template for YOU. Don't even think about how well
it's going to sell or if it will be widely accepted.

We can't do that all the time. Bills gotta paid. Kids gotta eat.
But, be sure to take a little bit of time every once in a while
just to explore something.

something truly for yourself, you're doing the best thing you
possibly can for the audience.

My kid's generation needs the next cultural shift that can mark
their era and set them a part from all the other surrounding
decades. But, that doesn't happen until someone decides to stand
up and take creative risks.

So what do you think?

We might not bring about some global shift in design styles BUT
for sure if we put ourselves out there we might just inspire
someone else to give it a shot.

And, before long that might be the catalyst that brings about
some big change.

can't do anything without a borage of hateful comments that wears you down =

one will figure out a way to snap a picture or video and put it up online f=
