I remember when I was first starting my career as a VA 14 years ago =E2=80=
=93 I would routinely overwhelm my prospects on our 30-minute free Discove=
ry calls.

I didn=E2=80=99t do it on purpose=2C but over and over=2C I could hear whe=
n I had crossed the line and was talking too much.

The problem was my fear that they wouldn't be interested in working with m=
e if I didn=E2=80=99t say the exact right thing to get hired. So every tim=
e they asked me a question=2C I just kept talking=2C and talking=2C giving=
 example after example of my work to convince them that hiring me was a go=
od idea.

What I didn=E2=80=99t realize was that it was working against me; many pot=
ential clients were heading for the hills.

Here=E2=80=99s how to avoid this problem:
1. Practice talking about your work. Write a script beforehand. Keep it sh=
ort and simple=2C one to two sentences. And when you=E2=80=99re finished s=
aying them=2C stop talking. Give the listener a chance to catch up with wh=
at you just said.

2. Keep your answers short. When your prospect=2C or a client for that mat=
ter=2C asks if you know how to do something=2C answer yes or no whenever p=
ossible. If they=E2=80=99re asking you to manage their calendar=2C they do=
n=E2=80=99t need to hear stories about the last time you did this task. A=
 simple=2C =E2=80=9Cyes=2C I=E2=80=99ve done that for clients before and e=
njoy it=E2=80=9D is a good place to start. They might have additional ques=
tions about your technique=2C but let them guide the amount of information=
 they want.

3. Don=E2=80=99t think out loud. When you=E2=80=99re in a consultation cal=
l with a prospect=2C even though it=E2=80=99s a natural impulse=2C don=E2=
=80=99t wing it. It=E2=80=99s better to say =E2=80=93 let me think about t=
hat for a minute and then answer their question vs. talking off the top of=
 your head. This is when your rambling usually occurs=2C and they are over=
whelmed.

It takes a while to get really good at 30-minute Discovery calls with pote=
ntial clients=2C but with practice=2C you=E2=80=99ll nail them. Remember=
=2C the goal is to make sure they=E2=80=99re a good fit=2C and not to talk=
 them into working with you. By creating space for the conversation to hap=
pen=2C you=E2=80=99ll find yourself with clients better suited for you.

I didn=E2=80=99t do it on purpose=2C but over and over=2C I could hear whe=
n I had crossed the line and was talking too much.</p>

mple after example of my work to convince them that hiring me was a good i=
dea.</p>

/strong>&nbsp;Write a script beforehand. Keep it short and simple=2C one t=
o two sentences. And when you=E2=80=99re finished saying them=2C stop talk=
ing. Give the listener a chance to catch up with what you just said.<br>

nbsp;When your prospect=2C or a client for that matter=2C asks if you know=
 how to do something=2C answer yes or no whenever possible. If they=E2=80=
=99re asking you to manage their calendar=2C they don=E2=80=99t need to he=
ar stories about the last time you did this task. A simple=2C =E2=80=9Cyes=
=2C I=E2=80=99ve done that for clients before and enjoy it=E2=80=9D is a g=
ood place to start. They might have additional questions about your techni=
que=2C but let them guide the amount of information they want.<br>

webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><strong>Don=E2=80=99t think out loud.</str=
ong>&nbsp;When you=E2=80=99re in a consultation call with a prospect=2C ev=
en though it=E2=80=99s a natural impulse=2C don=E2=80=99t wing it. It=E2=
=80=99s better to say =E2=80=93 let me think about that for a minute and t=
hen answer their question vs. talking off the top of your head. This is wh=
en your rambling usually occurs=2C and they are overwhelmed.</li>

nto working with you. By creating space for the conversation to happen=2C=
 you=E2=80=99ll find yourself with clients better suited for you.</p>
