Hey!

Judging something as a win or a loss is all about perspective.
Let me use a story to explain.

Let=E2=80=99s say there was this college student. Bright guy. Worked
hard. But by the end of the semester, he was barely passing. The
dean had no choice but to put him on academic probation. And even
worse=E2=80=94if he didn=E2=80=99t get his grades up, he=E2=80=99d lose all=
 of his
scholarships.

That semester would sound like a loss to most people.

But what if I told you the college student was only eight years
old? Changes things, right?

The fact that he even came close to passing is proof of
genius-level intelligence. It=E2=80=99s all about perspective.

And if that=E2=80=99s true, we need to be really, REALLY careful about
the perspective we bring to our lives and businesses.

Apples to Apples (Psst=E2=80=A6 You=E2=80=99re the Apple)

When you judge how something=E2=80=99s going, you have to make sure
you=E2=80=99re comparing your progress to the right thing. And wanna know
the only thing you should compare yourself to?

YOURSELF.

Not someone at a different stage in life with different skills,
resources, or opportunities.

Compare yourself to the you from two years ago. The you who
hadn=E2=80=99t started a business yet, or who was scared out of their
mind to try something new but did it anyway.

This whole idea is what Benjamin Hardy calls the =E2=80=9CGap vs. the
Gain.=E2=80=9D

The Gap is the space between where you are and where you want to
be. It=E2=80=99s frustrating. And for some reason, it=E2=80=99s what we foc=
us on
most when thinking about our progress.

The Gain, on the other hand, is the distance between where you
are today and where you used to be.

Like I once heard Steven Furtick preach:

=E2=80=9CI=E2=80=99m not where I want to be, but I=E2=80=99m nowhere near w=
here I once
was.=E2=80=9D

Our thoughts don=E2=80=99t naturally live in the Gain. I=E2=80=99ve never
randomly thought, =E2=80=9CWow, I sure am doing awesome!=E2=80=9D

No=E2=80=94it takes effort. At first, it feels unnatural to see your own
progress. But the more you do it, the more natural it becomes.

=E2=80=8BMy Half-Marathon DNF (Did Not Finish, for the Non-Racers in the
Room)

My wife and I recently ran a half-marathon at Disney, and it was
spectacular. Fireworks at the starting line. Disney characters
along the route for photos. Live music to keep us motivated.

But they also had balloon ladies.

What are balloon ladies, you ask? And why do they make me so
angry?

The balloon ladies start at the very back of the race. They keep
a specific pace. And if they pass you, you=E2=80=99re done. You get
pulled from the course because Disney eventually has to reopen
the parks.

We were doing great for 11.2 miles=E2=80=94but then those stinking
balloon ladies caught up to us, and we didn=E2=80=99t get to finish.

Now, we could focus on the Gap:

=E2=80=9CWe were only two miles away! We spent so much money to get here,
and we didn=E2=80=99t even cross the finish line!=E2=80=9D

Or, we could focus on the Gain:

=E2=80=9CWow, we just ran 11.2 miles in one of the coolest races ever. We
hardly ever go that distance on our own two feet. That=E2=80=99s pretty
awesome!=E2=80=9D

One perspective feels like a loss. The other feels like a win.

I=E2=80=99m choosing the win. And I think you should, too.

...Think about the things you=E2=80=99ve overcome.
...Think about the clients you DID GET, not the ones you didn=E2=80=99t.
...Think about the fact that you=E2=80=99re still here, still fighting.

That perspective? It will sustain you through the hardest times.

That perspective? It turns even the toughest loss into your
greatest opportunity.

So, what are you going to focus on=E2=80=94the Gap or the Gain?
