A common activity for new Virtual Assistants is =E2=80=9Cprospecting for c=
lients.=E2=80=9D I see this all time. They spend time looking for people w=
ho could =E2=80=9Cuse some help=E2=80=9D and think about posting flyers an=
d business cards or introducing themselves to all the business owners in t=
own.

But even though this might feel productive=2C it=E2=80=99s not a good use=
 of time. There is no need to look for clients. Your clients will come to=
 you; your job is to ensure you=E2=80=99re visible.

When the best clients want to hire a long-term Virtual Assistant=2C they w=
ill find someone who can make a referral=2C the same way people look for a=
n attorney=2C a dentist=2C or a babysitter.

The great news about getting clients through referrals is that by the time=
 they contact you=2C you=E2=80=99ve already got the gold stamp of approval=
 from the person who referred them to you. This makes discovery calls much=
 easier to navigate.

But you might be thinking=E2=80=A6 =E2=80=9CIf I=E2=80=99m not going to pr=
ospect=2C how will I get clients? I don=E2=80=99t know anyone who needs a=
 Virtual Assistant. How will this work?=E2=80=9D

Just like this:

First=2C you need to be able to talk about your work as a Virtual Assistan=
t in a clear=2C simple way. You can read about how to do that here (https:=

p. It=E2=80=99s very important.

Second=2C you want to make sure everyone you know knows about your busines=
s. And I mean everyone: your dentist=2C your neighbor=2C your friends=2C p=
ast co-workers=2C and every member of your family. Remember that you=E2=80=
=99re not selling to them. You=E2=80=99re not asking for referrals; you=E2=
=80=99re simply sharing the great news that you started a new business as=
 a Virtual Assistant.

Third=2C make new friends! Connections are everywhere. Attend networking e=
vents and even parties. Have your business card at your fingertips=2C and=
 don=E2=80=99t be shy about asking=2C =E2=80=9CWhat line of work are you i=
n?=E2=80=9D to start the conversation. When they=2C in turn=2C ask you=2C=
 you=E2=80=99ll be ready to reciprocate after nailing down step number one=
 (see above).

Finally=2C find ways to be visible in the digital world. Publish an email=
 newsletter that provides valuable information on a regular basis=2C send=
 emails to check in with people you know=2C and stay connected on social m=
edia.

There=E2=80=99s no special secret to selling your services. What connects=
 you with clients is authentic relationships and sharing your expertise in=
 a helpful way. I know many people are afraid of selling=E2=80=A6 so don=
=E2=80=99t sell. Do this instead. It works.
